Description

BENCH/, in partnership with Rizzoli New York, presents this rare publication chronicling the evolution of the terno from 1920 to 2020. Written by Gino Gonzales and Sandra Castro, the two-volume edition offers a comprehensive visual and historical account of the Philippines’ most enduring national dress.

Spanning a century of transformation, the set features more than 300 images, including rare archival materials, restored portraits, and newly commissioned photography. Together, these document the terno’s distinctive butterfly sleeves, evolving silhouettes, textile innovations, and intricate craftsmanship—from the Roaring Twenties and the golden age of Philippine couture in the 1950s to contemporary interpretations by today’s leading designers.

The publication features creations by National Artists Ramon Valera and Salvacion “Slim” Lim Higgins, celebrating the richness of Filipino artistry and craftsmanship. It traces the terno’s evolution through local traditions, cultural milestones, and global fashion influences, while also highlighting emerging talents and the contemporary visions of twenty-first-century Filipino designers.

About the Authors

Gino Gonzales received a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue an MFA in Theater Design at New York University. A practicing scenographer, lecturer, and published author, he has also contributed essays to Vogue Philippines and Arts of Asia.

Sandra Castro is a former curator of the Intramuros Administration and Ayala Museum. She has published extensively on Philippine material culture, with a particular focus on textiles.
